President Trump was tough on China, holding them accountable for the elimination of Hong Kong autonomy, and by putting the U.S. on more equal economic footing through tariffs.
A soft stance by Biden would certainly be welcomed by Communist China.
Chinese officials believe Joe Biden will “restore normalcy” in US-China relations — claiming “a new window of hope” is opening with Biden.
“China-US relations have come to a new crossroads, and a new window of hope is opening,” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in an interview with state-owned broadcaster CGTN.
“We hope that the next US administration will return to a sensible approach, resume dialogue with China, restore normalcy to the bilateral relations, and restart cooperation,” he continued.
Some see “normalcy” as a return to the indulgences of past administrations toward the world’s second largest economy and single party political system.
Questions have been raised about Biden’s family’s personal business dealings in China, including an investment firm that son Hunter Biden formed with institutions owned by the Chinese Communist Party just days after flying aboard Air Force Two to Beijing with his then Vice President father in 2013.
The top Beijing official also boldly claimed that “China never meddles in the internal affairs of the United States” — flying in the face of Beijing’s massive and well-documented espionage and influence campaigns.
In a September interview with The Post, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said China’s New York consulate was a major spy hub.
And the U.S. government was forced to shut down the Chinese consulate in Houston in July after two military assets there were charged with trying to steal COVID-19 vaccine research.
Beijing has poured hundreds of millions of dollars into US Ivy League institutions, including a $1 million donation to Columbia University to underwrite an educational program that the State Department has since branded part of China’s “global influence and propaganda apparatus.”
