Impeachment managers in the House are requesting that Donald Trump testifies during next week’s Senate impeachment trial.
Representative Jamie Raskin (D-MD) wrote in a letter to Trump, “Two days ago you filed an answer in which you denied many factual allegations set forth in the article of impeachment. You have thus attempted to put critical facts at issue notwithstanding the clear and overwhelming evidence of your constitutional offense.”
The request for Trump to testify before the Senate comes after much speculation as to if witnesses will be part of the Trial. As to a deadline for Trump’s response, Congressional members are wanting a testimony to be provided as early as 2/8 and as late as 2/11.
Any testimony provided will be up for cross-examination.
Senate rules for the trial are still unclear, particularly understanding if the Senate will require in-person testimony, or will accept depositions.
If Trump were to testify, it would be another landmark moment in American politics.
