Anonymous sources have reported that Russian government hackers have been monitoring communications of multiple US government agencies, including the Treasury and Commerce departments. According to these sources, the White House held a National Security Council meeting on the matter on Saturday. These sources are said to be a part of the official investigation.
Official US sources on the matter have not released much information about it yet other than confirming it’s authenticity. However, they are yet to place blame on any singular government publicly.
John Ullyot, a spokesman for the National Security Council, said they “are taking all necessary steps to identify and remedy any possible issues related to this situation.
The Russian foreign ministry made a post to Facebook describing the allegations as “another unfounded attempts of the U.S. media to blame Russia for hacker attacks on U.S. governmental bodies.”
It is currently unknown what information the hackers were after or what they were able to find. The anonymous sources also claimed that the hack was connected to the recent hacking of FireEye, a cybersecurity company with contracts involving the US government. The FBI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency are currently investigating the security breach and will release more information soon.
