Vice President Pence was campaigning for Senator Kelly Loeffler and Davide Perdue when he made comments to a Georgia crowd about the current election situation. “I know we all got our doubts about the last election,” he said, “I promise you, come this Wednesday, we’ll have our day in Congress. We’ll hear the objections. We’ll hear the evidence, but tomorrow is Georgia’s day.”
Pence was urging all Georgia Republicans to come out and vote, despite the lingering reservations many have about the 2020 presidential election
On January 5, Georgians will vote in a runoff Senate election, just one day before the joint session of Congress. Several House and Senate Republicans have committed to objecting to the certification of the Electoral College’s votes on that day.
As Vice President, Pence is the Senate’s president and will read the electoral votes for all 50 states on January 6. Over the last few days, there has been a debate over his role in the session.
Some legal experts have claimed Vice President Pence has the ability to outright reject the votes of state electors, while others have stated that he will only be counting them. Although he is yet to give an official statement on his exact capabilities during the assembly, Pence’s Chief of Staff stated that he “shares the concerns of millions of Americans about voter fraud and irregularities in the last election.”
