Senator Mitch McConnell had very strong words for other Senate Republicans on Tuesday saying, “Our system of government has processes to determine who will be sworn in on Jan. 20. The Electoral College has spoken. So today, I want to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden.”
The recognition of Joe Biden as the President-Elect was a clear sign to other GOP Senators to not follow the example set by over 100 House Republicans made, where they refused to recognize Joe Biden. The timing of McConnell’s statement follows Tuesday’s Electoral College meeting where electors formally counted ballots.
While the Electoral College has met and completed a very visible procedural step, there are GOP lawmakers who are hopeful in the possibility of contesting the results during a joint session of Congress on January 6th. To do this, one House member and one member of the Senate would have to contest the results. This event would force votes in both the upper and lower house.
