Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell blocked a request for unanimous consent to increase the stimulus check size from $600 to $2,000. The bill was a standalone package that would get $2,000 out to Americans while allowing Congress to continue to work on the parts of the stimulus package that many Americans were not happy with.
The House has already passed the bill and if the bill gets enough support in the Senate, President Trump has already stated that he will sign off on it.
President Trump has not signed the original stimulus package stating that he believed that much of the spending involved in the bill has nothing to do with the pandemic. He also advocated for giving Americans more money in direct cash relief. The President put off signing the original bill in an attempt to push Congress into approving the $2,000 checks.
McConnel has said that he plans on overriding President Trump’s veto of the defense bill on Wednesday. The House has already voted to override.
President Trump vetoed the defense bill because it did not repeal Section 230, which he had originally said beforehand he would do if Congress did not fix the section. Many conservatives believe that Section 230 gives social media companies the ability to censor any dissenting opinions on their networks.
The $2,000 standalone stimulus bill could still be voted on in the Senate if McConnell agrees at a later date.
